Hippopotamus Hippopotamus,
also
known
as
the
river
horse,
is
a
large,
semi-aquatic
mammal
native
to
Africa.
Their
name
comes
from
the
Greek
words
"hippo"
meaning
horse,
and
"potamus"
meaning
river. These
massive
creatures
can
weigh
over
3,000
pounds
and
stand
up
to
5
feet
tall.
They
are
well
adapted
for
their
aquatic
lifestyle,
with
eyes
and
nostrils
located
on
the
top
of
their
head
so
they
can
remain
almost
completely
submerged
underwater
while
still
being
able
to
see
and
breathe.
Their
thick
skin
is
also
incredibly
tough,
making
them
almost
immune
to
the
bites
of
predators
such
as
crocodiles. Despite
their
hefty
size『浏览更多 十二星座与性格文章请关注 :浣熊星座知识网,wWW.ImhuAnxiOng.coM」,
hippos
are
known
to
be
surprisingly
fast
and
agile
on
both
land
and
water.
They
can
run
up
to
30
miles
per
hour
on
land,
and
with
their
webbed
hooves,
they
are
able
to
move
quickly
through
the
water. One
interesting
fact
about
hippos
is
that
they
secrete
a
red
sweat-like
substance
that
acts
as
a
natural
sunscreen
and
antibacterial
agent.
This
"blood
sweat"
is
not
actually
blood,
but
a
specialized
fluid
produced
by
their
sweat
glands
to
keep
their
skin
healthy
and
hydrated. Sadly,
hippos
are
listed
as
a
vulnerable
species
due
to
habitat
loss
and
poaching.
Conservation
efforts
are
underway
to
protect
these
magnificent
animals
and
ensure
their
survival
for
generations
to
come.
